District 230 welcomes 2013-14 school year

Consolidated High Schools District 230 welcomed staff and students to the 2013-14 school year.  At Institute Day, School Board President Rick Nogal, ESP Association President Fran Hinojosa, Teacher's Association President Michelle Etchason and Superintendent Dr. James M. Gay welcomed staff and shared highlights of the coming school year. 

"We thank you for your prior efforts contributing to the success of District 230," remarked President Nogal.

"We welcome you to this new school year as we have in the past united in our mission to serve our students and our District 230 community to the best of our abilities."  

Superintendent Gay shared that the expansion of Advisory, Intervention and Enrichment programs will be a major highlight for this school year. All students will meet in Advisory class for a curriculum that has been developed by District 230 teachers focused on the Four Pillars of social and emotional learning including personal, academic, career and transition. In addition, intervention and enrichment opportunities will assist students. 

"Over the past few years we have focused on building those important relationships through Advisory, Intervention and Enrichment programs," Dr. Gay shared. "We are making significant strides to meet students where they are academically, socially and emotionally and helping them move forward to reach their fullest potential." 

In addition, Dr. Gay the District's goals which were developed in collaboration with the School Board and administration over the summer. These goals focus on four key areas.  

  • District 230 will guarantee a viable curriculum and sound instructional strategies that ensure college and career readiness skills for all students. Under this goal main targets include alignment with national Common Core Standards and essential learning targets. Staff will also focus on using assessments, technology and data to assure students are on target for academic success. The social and emotional curriculum that is incorporated into Advisory will also be a focus.
  • District 230 will ensure all students master the viable curriculum and college and career readiness skills is the second goal. Here staff will focus on assuring students are taking the most challenging classes that are appropriate for them. This area also focuses on supporting students to be successful in their individual classes and overall towards meeting graduation requirements.
  • District 230 will foster two-way communication using a wide-range of tools to engage stakeholders and provide accurate and timely information is another goal.
  • District 230 will maintain focus on providing appropriate resources to meet the educational needs of students while maintaining fiscal responsibility to taxpayers in the fourth goal. District 230 has maintained a balanced budget for the past 11 years and will continue to strive to do so.
