A Lincoln-Way East High School student has been selected to march in the halftime show at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 5 in San Antonio, TX.
Michelle Lindeman, a member of the Marching Griffins Colorguard, was among an elite group of colorguard members from across the United States picked to march in the halftime show at the Alamodome. Participants were selected based on their exceptional musicianship, marching achievement, character and leadership.
Michelle embodies the mental, emotional and physical strengths that are necessary to be a successful member of the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band, a representative from the U.S. Army told family and friends who gathered at East on Monday (Oct. 15) for a formal presentation announcement to the community.
“We’re proud to have her as a member of our team,” he added.
“Michelle exemplifies the type of student we have at all four Lincoln-Way high schools and we are proud that she is representing Lincoln-Way East,” said Bert Johnson, chair of the music department at Lincoln-Way East. “I can't think of a better ambassador than Michelle to represent the intensity and integrity of the marching music and colorguard activity.”
Michelle, who has been an integral part of the Marching Griffins’ Colorguard for the past four years, thanked her school and classmates for their overwhelming support.
“I am so excited for this opportunity,” she said, “and I hope to (represent) my community well.”
Michelle applied for an opportunity to join the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band last May by submitting an application, a letter of recommendation and a two-minute video of herself tossing, twirling and catching a flag and rifle.
She learned in July that she had been picked to join the 125-member band and colorguard in July.
“I’m really excited for her,” said Laura Lindeman, Michelle’s mother and biggest fan.
“She’s always practicing,” she added. “She loves it. She’s constantly twirling something – whether it’s a pencil or remote.”
Michelle is not the first Lincoln-Way student selected to march with the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.
Last year, Lincoln-Way Central colorguard member Hannah O’Flynn was picked to march with the band. The year before, Lincoln-Way North colorguard member Kaylene Kolpak marched with the band.
In 2009, Lincoln-Way North baritone player John Fiocca marched at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. In 2008, Lincoln-Way East musician Michael Blakley was picked for the honor.
Like her predecessors, Michelle will give up a portion of her winter break to march with the band. She will report to San Antonio on Dec. 31 to learn a 7-minute field show routine with the 125-member band and colorguard.
“I don’t mind (cutting my winter break short),” she said. “I’d rather be in the sun.”
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be broadcast live on NBC on Jan. 5.
