Who deserves to be recognized as Frankfort Patch's Person of the Year?
During the past week, readers have submitted names of folks they feel deserve the honor. We received five nominations. Below, you'll find answers to two questions about each nominee from those who nominated them. We did not change the answers at all. What was submitted to us is what you see.
Vote by selecting a person on the attached poll above. And, while you're at it, leave a few thoughts in the comment section about why he or she received your vote. You must be logged into the site to vote and comment.
We will accept votes until the end of the day on Dec. 30. Whomever receives the most votes is Frankfort Patch's Person of the Year and will have a story written about his or her efforts.
This story is one way for us to highlight all the great work going on in Frankfort. The other four people should be commended for their giving spirits as well. The person selected isn't receiving an award or gift certificate or anything to that nature—just a little recognition.
Here are the questions:
- Why should he or she be our Person of the Year?
- What affiliations does this person have (groups, boards, businesses, etc.)?
Joe Kral

I know Joe Kral as an honest and honorable man that by publically informing his constituents of how taxes are levied and assessed, thereby enabling property owners to initiate a timely review process, has reversed much inaccurate taxation. Tim & Scott, your allegations are both false and absurd. Shame on you!

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Kral and his office and the job that they do. Earlier this year my wife and I had an assessment concern and going in to it I had no idea what to expect what with the things people say and all. Mr. Kral met with us personally and addressed every question and concern that we had and was very generous with his time. I think we sat in the office for over an hour. I know its a thankless job and government officials get a bad rap a lot of times, but in this case here is a man who trying very hard (and succeeding!!!) to be the best he can be. For that I am thankful.

Denise Lenz is the finest woman I have ever known. I have only had the privledge of meeting her a few times but have seen her actively in this community for the past 8 years or so. She stepped up to help with people like Ric Carlson, Ellen Davis, Tommy Fagen, Margret Plesniak, scott Cannaloski, Connor Gill, Samantha Kragen, and Rachel Swallow. (please forgive me for any who I have forgotten or whose names I have misspelt) She has always made what I felt like were tough decisions with the school board, and she has raised the two daughters I have met to have alot of respect for people and whatever situation they have come from. My eldest son speaks very highly of her son as well. I feel like it is a total shame that all this hasnt been included in why she should be person of the year so here I am telling you. I can only imagine the amount of sacrifice she has had to make to help the community and make the impact she has.

To the editor -I thought this recognition was for someone who volunteered their time and effort in the community. This kral guy is the tax assessor and got all his republican cronies to vote for him, along with all the township employees. Shouldn't the person of the year have to at least get off his duff and do something honorable in the community, like Denise has. This is lousy choice and questions the Patch's credibility in the community. Bring back Joe.

I met Mr. Kral for the first time this year after seeing him give a wonderful presentation all about assessments and property taxes at the library event. We talked briefly and he encouraged me to make an appointment and come on in to see him. This was all for a somewhat complicated issue with my mother's property. Joe took the time explaining everything that was going on and even though she is a bit older and can't always hear very well that day she was able to understand everything just fine. A month later after someone had come out to remeasure her house and some paperwork filed, Joe called her himself to follow through and make sure that everything was resolved to her satisfaction. Joe Kral is an example of how government officials should be and he is an asset to our community.

My husband and I have been property owners in Mokena since 1998 and have seen our taxes go up and up. This past year, when we got our tax bill we though "enough is enough" and went down to the Assessor's office to complain. Even though we didn't like it, we met with Joe and he showed us how our house was assessed compared to our neighbors and that as it turns out we were actually a little low. Joe then explained about how taxes work and how your tax bill isn't always only about your assessment. We left that day feeling like we understood way more about the system. We didn't like the answer but Joe was very fair and very friendly the whole time and I can't ask for any more than that.

So many times government documents seem to be obscure and mysterious because most people don't get involved in the political arena. Mr. Kral will work with not only individuals, but also, community groups to take the mystery and frustration out of the taxing process. He is to be commended for the amount of time and effort that he has put into educating the Frankfort Township real estate owners. Lucinda S.

Why would you vote for someone who is getting paid for doing their job? The tax assessors job is to assess property taxes. What a joke this poll is!
