Sweet Dreams Hires Former Food Network Challenge Contestant

Miguel Garcia has appeared on the Food Network several times in recent years.

Frankfort bakery Sweet Dreams Cakes recently hired former Food Network champion Miguel Garcia as its new decorator.

Garcia appeared as an assistant on 11 episodes of Food Network Challenge between 2007-2011, five of which his team won. He also competed on season two of Last Cake Standing.

In his many Food Network appearances, Garcia was featured assisting Chicago baker and cake decorator Orlando Serrano.

Garcia was working as a carpenter when he met Serrano through a chance encounter at a bar. At the time, Serrano was looking for an assistant to accompany him on the Food Network shoot.

Two weeks later, Garcia was on set at the Food Network, filming his first appearance with Serrano.

Garcia says his experience filming was initially nerve-wracking, but that he quickly became comfortable in front of the camera.

“After a while, it just felt natural,” said Garcia. “It was just an awesome experience overall.”

Garcia specializes in sculpting modeling chocolate and hand painting confections. When filming with the Food Network, Garcia worked with Serrano to create animatronic character cakes with several motors. Their Mardi Gras cake included a moving float on wheels, complete with a cannon that shot confetti.

Garcia said that he loves creating something that leaves a lasting impression and seeing children’s faces when they’re presented with their cake.

“I like the fact that you’re creating a memory,” he said.

Sweet Dreams owner Vicki O’Bryant says she hired Garcia for his efficiency and creative flair.

So far, his specialty cakes for Sweet Dreams include a Thanksgiving themed cake and a cake for local business Pink Slip Boutique that was sculpted to look like a dress.

“His work speaks for itself,” said O’Bryant. “He’s very creative.”

Garcia’s appearance on the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving episode of Food Network Challenge will air at 9 a.m. on Nov. 15 on the Food Network.
