Manhattan Man in Fatal Car Accident Identified

Manhattan resident Jake Stevens, 22, died in a Frankfort Township car accident. New Lenox man Kevin Krohn was driving the vehicle, and police suspect alcohol was involved in the crash.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the fatal car accident that killed a Manhattan man Saturday while the driver, a New Lenox man, escaped.

The accident occurred about 3:45 a.m. Aug. 25 in Frankfort Township. The passenger, 22-year-old Jake Stevens of Manhattan, died as a result of burns.

Stevens was a passenger in a car driven by Kevin Krohn, 22, of New Lenox, when the vehicle went off the road and hit an obstruction. The car burst into flames, said Kathy Hoffmeyer, Will County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

Stevens' identity wasn't determined immediately, Hoffmeyer said. The Will County Coroner's Office identified Stevens through his dental records.

According to police, Krohn, who was wearing a seatbelt, managed to escape the car and crawl away. He suffered a broken leg and was treated at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

An unidentified witness spotted the blaze and called 911. The Frankfort Fire Protection District doused the fire at 104th Avenue and Steger Road. Sheriff's deputies talked to Krohn at the hospital. He reportedly told them that he jerked the steering wheel and lost control of the vehicle.

Krohn was issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Sheriff's police suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident. The accident remains under investigation.

Stevens was a 2008 graduate of Lincoln-Way Central High School.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at St. Joseph Church, 235 W. North St. in Manhattan. Burial will be at 10 a.m. A visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Forsythe Funeral Home in Manhattan.

RIP Jake. You are way to young to be leaving this life.

Very dangerous intersection due to hills on either side and how dark it is out there.

Charges need to be pressed against the driver. Drinking is a big deal and should not go unnoticed. Call a friend. Do not drive!

P.S. Check out Kevin's Facebook. He sure does look happy in the hospital picture after he just killed his friend. I don't appreciate seeing a smile and two thumbs up! Very disturbing!

This POS needs to be charged with negligent homicide at the very least. This road is not dangerous - unless the POS driver is going 80mph+ like this jerk. If this POS did this to someone close to me he wouldn't need to worry about court.

I do agree that he needs to be charged due to drinking, if he was drinking, or at the least wreckless driving, as far as the road being dangerous, I live near by and drive this road often, it is a dangerous road, even at the recommended speed, there needs to be stop signs at the least, I have said for years someone will get killed on this road, well, unfortunatly, I was right!

None of you know Kevin personally, none of you know the details of the accident besides what the paper said. Yes its sad n yes its tragic. Kevin is taking on alot of terrible comments but as much as ppl are sad about Jake people are happy Kevin made it. Drinking n driving is stupid but I guarantee more than eighty percent of the united states have driven drunk so keep ignorant comments to yourself. This is about a boy losing his life and another getting another chance!

look at the will county court house website, to to multi access, click on 'limited' information, it will give you a 4 letter/digit code, put in kevin krohn's name and just see how many 'chances' he has had. And...any thoughts of the 'thumbs up' picture that someone commented above? How about all the drinking pictures on his face book while he was on court supervision / probation? Hopefully, your family will never feel the sorrow and loss that Jake's family if feeling. The guilty always walk (or crawl) away....poor Jake couldn't get out of the car. No 2nd chances....

Aww, poor Kevin. We really should lighten-up on the guy who got wasted, totalled his car and left his bud to die a horrible death. We relly should go lightly on the lad and give him another chance- again.

Looked at his info on the court site. Its amazing he has not killed anybody sooner. If the State was doing its job, this POS should have had his license revoked after his third incident, not his 8th. I Hope he gets at least 8 - 15 years. He can do his time with another moron I know who killed someone after his 5th DUI.

But yes let's all listen to the people on this website who didn't know Jake and don't know Kevin and aren't friends with one of the fire fighters that reported to the accident. Yes your all right lol and who goes on a courthouse website to get in someone's business that much. Stalker

just backing up my info with 'facts'....something you obviously were not going to put out there. And....the courthouse information is a open public domain. This information will be used during trial. It is called his 'criminal history'. He broke the law. It doesn't matter if you are friends with a 'fireman' who responded. The blood alcohol test will tell all.....and name calling is very unbecoming of you.

I do not know either of the parties involved but I do know this. You are sadly mistaken. Not all drivers behave like that. We all make mistakes but getting behind the wheel of a car when one has been drinking is a choice, not a mistake. Sadly a life was lost and the driver will have to live with his actions. It will be interesting to see if the driver gets charged with DUI when the toxicology reports come in.

The information on the courthouse website is public record.

Guilty as charged. Facebook is deleted. (His hospital room number and cell phone number was listed on Facebook. Sounds like a cry for attention! Where was your cell phone the night of the accident?) Wow. Can't even own up to what you did. Kevin's record is still public. Can't hide that. When the alcohol results come back, the truth will be told. But, for now, we all see Kevin is not a good person who had 8 too many DUIs and still able to legally drive? Drinking and driving is against the law. 80% of drivers do not drink and drive. You put innocent lives at risk. What will it take for you all to see he needs to be locked up for life so he never has a tenth chance to kill another person?
By the way, Jake was a very special person to me. I knew him for many years, and what we lost that day will never come back. Kevin's injuries will be gone in a few months, but Jake's is everlasting. R.I.P. Jake <3 We all miss you.

His fb is deactivated because the cops asked him to do that for now and his cell phone was burned he had a relatives cell phone in the hospital. He's not even in the hospital anymore he is home. And really he is the same as a murderer who did this on purpose? I'm pretty sure he didn't put Jake in that car against his will didn't choose for Jake to be hammered and didn't do this with I'll intentions thinking I can't wait till he dies. So hold off on ur murderer charges. U guys remember the kid that was drunk driving on Wilmington peotone road, Joe Slattery? He killed a woman in a car accident and this was last year, never got charger w homicide or anything Crazy like that and either will Kevin. If you guys look at Jakes public record it is way longer than Kevin's so if Jake was behind the wheel instead of Kevin the none of you would be saying this. Kevin has owned up to what he did, does nobody understand what a car accident is, an accident!!! Kevin did not do this on purpose. Ya he shouldn't of been driving after drinking but it was an accident. Jake wasn't forced in that car, he made that choice on his own. So everyone can stop pointing fingers at Kevin because he's not a murderer!! It is a terrible thing that make is gone, but you know what when did you ever see him without a beer in his hand? Stop putting all blame on Kevin. Jake had a choice that night & they both chose the wrong one.

Very interesting thread here. It amazes me how much interest and energy people take in others business whenever I read something like this. The blaming, hurtful words and negative energy presented back and forth here is not helping this situation or my family AT ALL. Jake is my nephew, his father my brother. And his family's level off loss is unimaginable. Our family grieves for our loss and what could have been. Since there is now a hole in our family where there should be a branch. Today we say good bye to Jake so we would appreciate it if you could end your discussion here.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Sorry, the discussion doesn't end here.

Kevin has the potential to be released with a slap on the wrist and to do more harm. His behavior has ended a life, and it's just a matter of time before he kills someone else if he is allowed to drive drunk whenever he feels like it.

I agree, Kevin needs to face some sort of punishment for his actions. A slap on the wrist only encourages him to get into another vehicle intoxicated and have the same thing happen again. I have known Jake a long time, and it is heartbreaking to know that this happened to him. The fact that Kevin is at home instead of facing consequences is sickening to me. Regardless of if Jake got into the vehicle voluntarily, Kevin knows better than to drive intoxicated & Kevin broke the law no matter which way you spin it. I understand that the family and friends may not blame him, and that is fine, as I am not trying to place blame. It's black and white, plain and simple - Kevin broke the law, and that ended Jake's life. That is murder, and to me, that deserves more than a traffic violation. This behavior needs to be put to an end before he kills someone else. It's a serious matter that people seem to be able to justify, and that will NEVER make sense to me.

Lisa, sorry for the loss of your family member. There is a bunch of people who do not want to forget what happened....we are very mad and want to voice our opinion about drinking and driving. Jake may have been related to you, but he was also a friend to many. Putting check marks 'does not follow directions' to insult those defending the innocent that died...and I do mean innocent. It does not matter that Jake was intoxicated. It is the responsibility of the driver not to drive. Making the decision to drink and be a passenger in a car is not a crime. What happened is NOT ok with a lot of us. This wasn't a 'one time' go out and get drunk and just happened to get into a accident...this was a nightly thing for Kevin and it was tolerated by his family that let him come stumbling in night after night. It was just a matter of time. Many of us just want justice, thats all. If that means that 'we don't play well with others' then so be it. No one needs to make any excuses for Kevin or anyone else that decides to drink and drive. It is called "ACCOUNTABILITY" for your actions.

I don't think either of the 2 involved are victims. Chances are both were drunk and made a dumb decision (If Jake was sober then it was even more dumb). Kevin is the type of kid to be easily peer pressured, so it is possible he was even coerced into driving. I don't think it would be right to place the blame solely on him, as Jake obviously made a reckless decision as well by riding along. Sure it might not be illegal to ride with somebody while intoxicated, but it doesn't make it right.

Regardless, it is sad to see 2 guys this young die and end up in jail.

defending the innocent, I understand all too well about this justice and accountability you speak of. I just don't happen to think hashing it out in a public forum is a productive pursuit. Do you?? Will this exchange of hateful words and thoughts presented before my original post change anything? I think not. It's just a forum for anonymous people to express their opinion. Will we get justice by expressing this?? Will Kevin be held accountable by these opinions?? If you or anyone else here really want to be helpful please channel your energies to an organization such ad MADD http://www.madd.org/about-us/mission/ or the DUI Foundation http://www.duifoundation.org/support/awareness/. Donate, volunteer, educate, push for tougher DUI legislation ...but by all means please do not do so under the cloak of anonymity. These days it is all to easy to blow off a few paragraphs without doing so. We need people to stand up for their convictions.

And for the record, it's NOT ok with us either. Not only will Kevin pay for what he has done.....he will live with it also.
