No Direct Elections, No Gambling: 2012 Illinois Republican Convention

Despite impassioned speeches about opening up the Illinois GOP, the Platform and Resolutions Committee voted against sending the return of direct elections for state committeemen to the floor. Read our live blog transcript for more details.

Update, 10 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012

Illinois Republicans hoping to have more of a say in the state party's processes will have to wait another four years for another swing at it.

While McLean County Republicans Chairman John Parrott rallied the packed room at the Platform and Resolutions Committee meeting Friday, during the Illinois State GOP Convention in Tinley Park, the votes fell short for direct elections of state committeemen and won't go to the full delegate floor Saturday.

Those in favor of the election said it would energize the state's Republicans, bring them back into the process and eventually turn Illinois back to red. And those against said the money needed to campaign would only corrupt another process further, and other obstacles would be counter productive.

The committee also decided to leave language against opening Illinois' doors to gambling.

Original Post, 5:58 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2012

Republicans from across the state meet this weekend at the Tinley Park Convention Center to make key party calls for the upcoming presidential election and for the years that follow.

Among them are the following, according to state Republican officials:

  • Adopting a party platform for the next four years
  • Electing a National Committeeman and Committeewoman
  • Selecting Presidential Electors who will go to Springfield to cast their votes for Gov. Mitt Romney if he defeats President Barack Obama in Illinois
  • Deciding on who the at-large national convention delegates will be appointed for the Presidential Nomination
  • Deciding whether to hold a popular vote for State Central Committeemen and Committeemen, one of each per congressional district, starting in 2014

Republican representatives will also attend several workshops, including one on the use of social media during elections.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus will also be on hand during the convention, as will other officials from across the state and country.

See the full convention schedule online.

Patch staff will be there throughout starting Friday morning with updates running on our live blog above.

Please join in the discussion and let us know if you have any questions along the way.

The IL GOP is run by people who think the biggest problem with Illinois is that Republicans want to participate to much in their own party.

You have got that right, this is the party that gave us candidates like John McCain and Bob Dole. Losers from the beginning. That is why it is almost non-existent in Illinois. We could have done much better than Mark Kirk (I don't want to kick the man when he is down) but we needed a more conservative candidate. Thank you

R.W.Voter - Mark Kirk won because he was not too conservative - the republican party has forgotten that not all of us are ultra-conservative like the party is leaning. Why do you think Bill Brady lost??? All you too right wingers forget what Buckley said about nominating the most conservative person who can WIN....not the most conservative.

Thank you for commenting GOPgal and R.W.Voter. What do you think the answer is to restoring the integrity of the party, either on a state or national level?

Well, the best thing that could happen to the party is that if Mike Madigan retired. He has pushed the Republicans to the status of the green party. I laugh when Republicans go on about George Ryan, he was a died in the wool liberal Democrat, as was Jim Thompson. I was born Democrat, attempted to be a Republican, I guess I am just a right wing independent, and voter, and always will. Thank you

Carrie - We need direct elections at the Illinois GOP. It's really that simple. The Illinois GOP is in much worse shape today than it was under George Ryan.

What happened today at the state convention was a perfect example of why we need this reform. Rank-and-file Republicans are not going to be a part of an organizaton that disrespect them to such a level they are refused a right to vote for its leadership. Without energized ground troops, our Party will continue to lose the battles.

Think about it. If Boeing announced tomorrow that its shareholders would no longer have a vote - do you think anyone would consider investing in the company. Of course not.

Until we get new leadership within the Illinois GOP, Illinois will remain a Blue state. And the only way we get new leadership is through direct elections. The system we have in place now makes it impossible for Scott Walker-type Republicans to break through.

Term limits would go a long way to help our state recover.

Dianna,
Normally I'm not a big fan of term limits. BUT, Illinois could be the poster child for how entrenched elected politics can go wrong.
I'm willing to jump on the term limits band wagon as a part of the solution.

The Republican party only wants you if your far right.George Ryan got this state moving. We must learn compromise in not a bad word.If you can't make a deal to benefit the people stay at home.Votes for bills you know won't pass is not progress.
