Girls Basketball: Andrew Zaps L-Way North at Free Throw Line
Andrew 44, Lincoln-Way North 29. Tough zone defense and a near-perfect night from the free throw line give Thunderbolts their 10th conference win.
The Hot Read: Andrew, clinging to a 15-14 lead early in the third quarter against rival Lincoln-Way North, went on a 13-2 scoring run and pulled away to notch a 44-29 girls basketball victory on Monday night. The T-Bolts’ aggressive 2-2-1 zone defense forced eight third-quarter turnovers and put the Phoenix in a double-digit hole for much of the fourth. The Andrew defense also kept 6-3 Phoenix forward Emily Jenkins silent for much of the night. She scored six second-half points.
Patch’s MVP: Andrew freshman forward Molly Franson scored 12 points and picked up six rebounds off the bench as the T-Bolts' sixth man. Eight of her 12 points came on three-point plays. She did a credible job on defense, keeping Jenkins in check for much of the game.
Key Stats: The T-Bolts went 15-of-17 from the free throw line. They were a perfect 10-for-10 in the fourth quarter. The Phoenix, meanwhile, were an abysmal 3-of-13 for the game and 1-for-7 at the line in the fourth quarter.
Andrew Leaders: In addition to Franson: Lauren Mangin (10 points), Nicole Botich (8 points, 5 rebounds).
L-Way North Leaders: Erynn Schuh (9 points, 8 rebounds), Emily Jenkins (6 points, 3 rebounds).
Quotable I: T-Bolts coach Bob Matz: “It was a nice win against a real good team. I’m very proud of the way our girls played.”
Quotable II: Phoenix coach Jim Nair: “I thought our team attacked pretty well most of the night, but we've got to finish our shots and free throws.”
Records: Andrew: 21-2, 10-1 in the Southwest Suburban Red. Lincoln-Way North: 18-5, 8-3.
What’s Next: The T-Bolts play a home game against conference foe Thornridge on Thursday. The Phoenix go on the road Tuesday to play rival Lincoln-Way West.
