What started out as a traffic stop over loud music turned into an arrest for heroin possession for a Frankfort man.

Benjamin O. Best, 20, of the 22900 block of Folkestone Way, was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance, as well as being charged with misdemeanor possession of alcohol by a minor, illegal transportation of alcohol and operating a vehicle with a loud sound system. Best's charge of felony possession of a controlled substance was later changed to misdemeanor possesion of drug paraphernalia by prosecutors, according to court records. The charge of misdemeanor possession of alcohol by a minor also was dropped, court records show.

At around 9:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, Frankfort Police officers heard Best playing really loud music from his white Hyundai Sonata as he pulled out of the BP gas station on Lincoln Highway, said Cmdr. Kevin Keegan. As officers followed Best eastbound on Lincoln Highway, they could still hear the stereo playing at a very loud volume more than a 100 feet away, which is a violation, Keegan added.

When officers pulled over Best near the intersection of Lincoln Highway and Pfeiffer Road, they smelled alcohol and saw a large glass bottle of Svedka vodka on the front passenger side floor, Keegan said. Officers asked Best to perform a field sobriety test, which he failed, Keegan added. When an officer went to retrieve the vodka bottle, he found cut plastic baggies, wire and a rolled-up dollar bill with white powder on it, Keegan said, adding that the powder was later confirmed to be heroin.

Best was taken into custody and brought to the Frankfort police station, where he confessed that he was a heroin user, Keegan said. He was then booked into Will County Jail and released on bail. Best's next court date is Feb. 23, and he also faces a pretrial hearing that same day for misdemeanor domestic battery in a separate case from last year, according to court records.
