Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition Completes Mural in Frankfort

The Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition (ILHC) announced the completion of a stunning mural in Frankfort, Illinois on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011. The mural is on the Frankfort Township Building at 11008 West Lincoln Highway and features Eagle Scouts and Scout Masters who made a Nationwide Safety Tour along the Lincoln Highway in 1928.

The tour depicted in the mural was a promotion of the Lincoln Highway and the Scouts’ upcoming event of placing the Lincoln Highway concrete markers.  The story of their adventure giving safety demonstrations daily along the route, “good road turns”, and helping out wherever needed is told in the fantastic mural.  Rich sepia tones highlight the detailed images of the young men posing for the celebratory photo and authentic color is instilled in the mural to illustrate the larger than life concrete marker.

The ILHC’s multi-site mural project showcases the history of the early highway, bringing the intriguing stories into people’s lives so they can recognize its impact on American travel and the communities. This is the 23rd mural installed on the Lincoln Highway.

Frankfort is one of 43 communities who are Certified Communities of the ILHC.  The village had an ILHC interpretive gazebo installed in the fall of 2009. The Village of University Park is the last Chicago Southland community to have an ILHC mural installed in August 2010.

The Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau represents the Chicago Southland on the board of the ILHC. “This new mural is a testament to Frankfort's rich heritage and their long relationship with the Lincoln Highway,” said Jim Garrett, CDME, President/CEO, Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The Lincoln Highway stretches from its eastern portal at Lynwood to its Mississippi River crossing at Fulton along the 179-mile Illinois byway corridor, touching eight counties and 32 individual municipalities.
