District 157-C students to honor veterans through events
Frankfort School District 157-C students will again honor veterans through various special Veterans Day programs. Local community veterans are welcome and invited to attend the events at the schools
On Wednesday, November 7, the Hickory Creek Middle School band will host its annual Fall Band Showcase and Fundraiser at the school from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at 22150 116th Avenue in Frankfort. The free concert will feature performances by the Fifth Grade Band, Tiger Band and Jazz Band. The Veteran’s Day Observation will be presented at 7:00 PM by the Tiger Band in cooperation with the Village of Frankfort and Mayor Jim Holland. The program will include several patriotic songs, including a medley of marches of the Armed Forces, with local veterans in attendance being recognized. The Band Booster organization will sell desserts along with complimentary coffee and punch. All veterans will receive a boutonniere/corsage and a voucher for a free dessert if they RSVP by November 2 to Sandy at hisan@comcast.net. Band Boosters will also sell raffle tickets with prizes of an i-Pad and Kindle. Raffle tickets may be purchased by contacting Judy at judy.arseneau@comcast.net. Additional raffle baskets include haircut/blow dry, personal training sessions, Briosa Boutique and Lumes Pancake House. Businesses may purchase an ad in the concert program book by contacting Tim by November 1st at pie94@comcast.net. All proceeds will benefit the band program.
On Friday, November 9, Hickory Creek seventh grade students will hold a special Veterans Day observance at 8:00 – 9:30 AM at Hickory Creek Middle School, 22150 116th Avenue in Frankfort. Veterans are welcome to join the students as they listen to guest speakers. The students will acknowledge veterans from the community to thank them for their service and invite them to join them for a photo following the ceremony. Students have been competing to raise money for Honor Flight Chicago, a not-for-profit organization that brings World War II veterans to Washington, DC at no cost to them for a day of honor. During the assembly, students will present a check to Honor Flight Chicago with the funds raised.
On Monday, November 12, Grand Prairie Elementary School, 10480 W. Nebraska, will participate in an all-school Veterans Day sing at 9:15 AM with students inviting family members who are veterans. Technology instructor Barb Campbell will assemble a photo story video of veterans who are friends or family members of Grand Prairie students and staff. All 750 students at the school are making cards for veterans. Teachers Becky Cleveland and Carolyn Stanek who have sons serving in the military will deliver the cards to the Manteno Veterans Home. Beginning November 1 for two weeks, the school will also collect items to send overseas to the troops.
At Chelsea Intermediate School, 22265 S. 80th Avenue, students will also observe Veterans Day through a number of activities throughout the school day.
